I visited Empire Outlets in Summer 2025, and while the location by the Hudson River is lovely, most of the stores were not yet open or occupied, limiting the shopping experience.
While Empire Outlets itself still has limited stores and deals as of Summer 2025, a major perk is its proximity to the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry is free and offers close-up views of the Statue of Liberty, making the trip worthwhile even if shopping options are sparse.
Of the stores that were open, existing brands did not offer much in terms of deals or appealing collections. It seems like a fairly new mall, and many of the stores are still closed or empty. The parking area is large, and I think the fee was around $16 for up to 8 hours. When tourist who come to New York take the Staten Island Ferry, many get right back on. I dont think many people realize that the Empire outlets are right there. I believe they are still trying to get other store in that outlet area but right now what they have is great. If you walk the path of the water, you will also come upon a 9/11 Memorial. It is so touching. Dont just take the ride to see The Statute of Liberty, stay, shop, see for yourself all the wonderful things here. You can also grab transportation to other places. You will not find a single place to sit down in this mall. There are no benches or chairs unless you purchase food. My legs were killing me so I decided to sit on the floor to rest (on one of the near-abandoned upper floors, completely out of the way). I had 30 minutes of peace before a gentleman sternly told me "no sitting on the ground". I understand the need to keep loiterers to a minimum, but not having a single place to sit is hostile. This is a gorgeous Macy’s store that spreads over 3 floors. It’s bright, clean and looks so glossy. There’s a passageway that connects the parking lot. Lots of people walk thru this store to enter the mall.
They have apparel, accessories, cosmetics, shoes, home goods, toys and so much more. Prices are similar to other Macy’s and the website. Throughout the year they have promotional sales and discounts on different products. I have found good deals on men’s shirt and for my daughter’s clothing. I am not too sure how Nordstrom plans on improving the customer service experience when they deny their loyal paying customers the usage of previously available restrooms. It is unfortunate that in this day and age when other establishments are partial to the biological needs of their clients, this establishment is losing it's class and customer service and going in the direction of a McDonalds or a Dunkin Donuts with archaic hostile consumer practices. They are expanding this business model to other locations and ensuring their reputability goes to the toilet. They can comment and make excuses on my review, but that does not deny the fact that they will not improve the experience unless they listen to their paying customers and serve their needs accordingly. New stores, lighting and supposedly new restaurants are on the way.

I was one of the sisters involved in an uncomfortable interaction at the Monkey business Ornaments stall at the Union Square Holiday Market (also known on Etsy as MonkeyBizUS). My sisters and I briefly stopped to take a photo, something many shoppers around us were doing, and there were no signs indicating that photos were not allowed. Despite this, the vendor spoke to us in a rude and passive-aggressive manner and demanded that we move along. I replied to her saying that this is New York City- literally a busy holiday market with everyone taking photos of their food and with their loved ones, and she cannot tell us what to do when there’s thousands of others doing the same thing.
The interaction felt unnecessarily confrontational and made us feel singled out in a public space. What should have been a festive and enjoyable holiday experience quickly turned uncomfortable due to the vendor’s tone and behavior. This was especially disappointing in a market that is known for celebrating creativity, diversity, and community.
Busy, multicultural markets naturally involve crowds and brief pauses from visitors. If that environment is overwhelming, it may not be the right setting for a business. This experience left a lasting negative impression, and I would encourage others to think twice before supporting vendors who treat potential customers this way. Great food for a good price. The variety at the food court is great (roast, Mexican, Japanese, handmade pizza... etc...) and the space is pretty cozy with quite a lot of seats or standing area to dine from. What’s better, is that aside from being a food court, there’s also food market inside it. I desperately wanted to like Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg Winter Market, but I have to say I was disappointed as this seems to only cater to the hipster crowd that seems to occupy the Williamsburg neighborhood. The Brooklyn Flea portion is relatively small, and is only filled with vendors that offer handcrafted jewelry, or antique clothes that seem to be as old as they are distasteful. The kicker is that the majority of the flea vendors are more interested in their phones, instead of earning your business with some genuine salesmanship or custom service.
The view of manhattan from the market is spectacular!
As for the Smorgasburg Winter Market portion, there were some good vendors there offering some genuinely tasty food. The selection of vendors was pretty small, only about 12. Many of the vendors did offer a discount for using Apple Pay, so be sure to use it. Seating is limited so if you see a table that is open, grab it quickly.
